The Sixth Edition: Effective Now (APA)?
When will I need to start using the sixth edition of theAPA Style Manual?
It will take a while to figure out what’s different about the revised manual and for the new style rules to become second nature. That may take a year or so. At APA, 2010 journal issues will be the first ones to adhere to the revised manual.
San Antonio Independent School District Gears Up for College
San Antonio Schools held two college fairs as part of its GEAR UP program to help the class of 2012 get ready for college. Current Sixth Grade students and their families attended college fairs at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Participants learned about basic college requirements, entrance examinations, and how to find financial aid. To add a little local flavor to the occasion, school cheerleaders and mariachis performed and refreshments were served.
Note to APA Style Community: Sixth Edition Corrections
We are grateful for the lively and thoughtful discussion that has resulted from the release of the sixth edition of the Publication Manual on this blog and also among other APA Style communities. We recently learned of a post on a listserv regarding corrections to the manual that has caused much alarm among members of the APA Style community and, despite good intentions, includes misleading and erroneous information. We would like to clarify the nature and extent of the errors in the sixth edition and tell you how you can access the corrections online.
Middle School Teacher Finds Key to Making Reading Fun
Most teachers have found that getting their students interested in reading is no easy task. But one teacher in Queens Village, N.Y., has found an innovative way to keep students in her sixth-grade class focused and entertained while improving their reading skills.
Collective Nouns: Here Yesterday, Gone Tomorrow (APA)?
“Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?”
“To the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime.”
“The dog did nothing in the nighttime.”
“That was the curious incident,” remarked Sherlock Holmes.
—Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, “Silver Blaze”
What Would You Like to Hear About? (APA)
We’ve been going on about who we are, what on earth this thing called a DOI is and how one finds one, and the typical components of an APA-Styled reference. We’ve also expounded, at great length, on the changes in APA Style brought about by the publication of the sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.

Phoenix Schools See School Choice As A Necessity
Neighborhood schools are quickly becoming a thing of the past. With such things as school rankings, school “grades” for each school, and the No Child Left Behind act, simply sending our children to the grade school down the street is going the way of the dodo bird.
Today, Phoenix Schools’ parents have the option of sending their children to almost any school they wish within the district serving Phoenix Public Schools. While some may indeed choose to stick with the neighbo...
Florida School Grading System
To unify curriculum and learning benchmarks, Florida State created the Sunshine State Standards, or SSS. These regulations outline what each student should learn during their current school year before being promoted to the next grade level. By adopting these standards, schools are better equipped to assign realistic goals to each student and teachers can concentrate on how to teach, rather than what to teach.
When the SSS committee created the criterion for each grade lev...
Home Schooling For Second Grade Spelling Words
If you are considering or doing home schooling there are some benchmarks you can use.
When your child has reached the equivalency of second grade they have already learned a host of language items. One of these critical learning elements is that of correct spelling. Home educators just like teachers work diligently to reinforce spelling words at the second grade level.
As a home educator you can follow the methodical approach to teaching second grade spelling that is used...
Crash
Crash by Jerry Spinelli is about a young man named John Coogan. Everyone calls John Crash except for one boy named Penn Webb. Everyone calls him Crash because when he got his football helmet for Christmas his Uncle Herm's family came over to see his presents and when they opened the door Crash growled “hut, hut, hut” and plowed straight through Herm's daughter, Bridget, knocking her on her butt into a foot of snow.
A Latin Dictionary Saved My Life
In many ways, I have never been much of a student, especially if you are talking about being a student within the confines of a classroom. I've always loved learning, don't get me wrong, but get me inside a classroom for months on end and there is little that can be done to keep me interested in even the most fascinating subjects. I have no real idea how I managed to make it through four years of college. My Latin class in particular almost had the power to ruin my college ca...
