Letter Success
Job hunting is a laborious process and after sending out your resume to what seems like a hundred different companies and hearing nothing back from any
of them, you may be wondering why your college degree and ample work experience has not warranted a second glance anywhere. The answer may lie with your cover
letter.
Even if your resume is impressive and boasts all
of your great attributes – graduated (with honors!) from a prestigious university, worked several rewarding internships – the hiring manager in charge
of calling in applicants for interviews may have been turned
off immediately if your cover
letter was poorly conceived and poorly written. The fact is, hiring managers, especially for popular and big companies, may see hundreds
of applications after a
job listing has been posted. Looking over that many resumes can be tiresome and tedious, so many first look over the cover
letter before even laying eyes on the applicant’s resume. If the cover
letter does not strike a chord with the hiring manager, then the entire
application is trashed, regardless
of how impressive the resume may have been.
