Writing a Descriptive Essay

Writing a descriptive essay is really all about describing something-it could be a society, or an object or even a person-you may for instance be asked to write an essay about a particular character in a book in which case what this actually means is that you have been asked to describe that person –including some events or incidents that throw up a persons character.

You could be writing a descriptive essay about a particular place that you had visited in your childhood or about a person you have known-like a favorite teacher. On a less complicated level, descriptive essays can be on a topic like, ‘Describe your pet dog.’

In Part 2, I discussed how to create a simple list with serial commas and when to use semicolons in a list of items with internal commas. Today, I show how lowercase letters may be used as well.
Lowercase Letters

This is the second in a six-part series about lists in APA Style. Today I’ll provide examples of serial commas and semicolons.

Commas
The most basic type of list appears in the running text of a sentence, with each item separated by a comma. All lists in APA Style should include a serial comma—the final comma before the conjunction.

This is the fifth in a six-part series about lists. Today I’ll discuss bulleted lists, which are new to APA Style!

Bulleted Lists
As the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association notes (p. 63), creating a list sometimes “helps the reader understand the organization of key points.” And although numbered lists are useful, in some cases the numbers may imply a chronology or ranking of importance that you don’t intend. Thus, I’m happy to share that bulleted lists are now an official part of APA Style (pp. 64–65)!

Mukenga Mask
The Mukenga Mask was created in Zaire in late nineteenth century and was very important to the Kuba people. It was the element of power and was worn in ceremonies by Kuba’s king. The mask stood for the Kuba hero Woot who was considered to be the creator of the world. Kuba people believed in being the children of Woot, the original leader and founder of aristocratic line. The mask was covered with the skin of leopard, ruff of a monkey, and feathers of the red parrot. The eyes represented a chameleon and the trunk represented elephant’s power. The mask itself was made of wood, cowry shells, beads, raffia cloth and fiber. Mukenga mask is a copy of Mwaash mask made in the sixteenth century by people in the eastern part of the Kuba, nevertheless, it has become the most important element in understanding the culture and beliefs of Kuba people.

College-level essays about literature usually follow Modern Language Association (MLA) style. MLA has very specific guidelines for quoting and citing lines from poems. Citing lines of poetry is always the same, but formatting quotations depends on how many lines you quote.

Remember first that any exact wording from poems must be properly quoted and cited. Plagiarism occurs when you do not quote and cite material correctly. Most likely, your instructor has outlined the penalties for plagiarism in your class.

Memorization can be done in so many ways; one would think that there are endless possibilities in learning and improving one’s memory. This is the fun part of memorization – that anybody of any age can actually still learn and improve (or maintain) his or her memorization skills. As I climbed 15-feet on a wooden ladder to the top of an old platform, next to this wall of leathery gray flesh, I caught a good whiff of fresh animal dung that immediately cleared my sinuses. Attempting to hide my fear from my wife with a poker face, and already feeling a little queasy, we were then advised by an old man who held a hammer in his right hand, to step into a shaky bamboo cradle seat atop of this seemingly gentle 8000 lb mammoth giant. At last, we were elephant trekking in Thailand. Apart from the slow bumpy ride, and my thighs being chafed on the course sides of this enormous peaceful beast, the serene walk through the forest with its’ beautiful and unique flora on top of one of the strongest ancient animals alive, was an unforgettably pleasant experience for both of us.

The most recent classification of clouds was accomplished by the World Meteorological Organization in 1956. This organization lists 10 basic kinds of clouds that are subdivided into species according to their outer shape and inner structure. In addition, cloud varieties are discussed according to arrangement and transparency. There is a height classification which are called high, middle, and low altitudes. The different kinds of clouds are found in these three divisions according to the clouds' altitude.

One way of doing this is to use the language of the senses and appeal to readers' emotions. This method is referred to as "appealing to the senses description". Another way of drawing pictures for the reader is to describe objects with reference to space. This method is referred to as "spatial order description". If you follow either of these conventions, a few general tips and stick to a plan, you will find that writing descriptive essays is not that difficult after all.

A research paper template is like a skeleton of the thesis paper and gives the entire essay a structure and shape. Having a template in front while writing the essay will produce a perfect write up without having to worry too much about the outline or essay format. It becomes easier for the writer to to organize and develop his thoughts and ideas in the correct direction. A template is like a research paper outline and plans the field of discussion. The writer will know what part to stress on and what part to leave out for later work. It technically delineates the topic issues.

College Admissions is Not a Game

At the annual NACAC conference, the “Town Hall” session is meant to be a forum for members to directly address the organization’s leadership about their cares and concerns. Sitting in this year’s session, I am struck by the cross section of schools and constituencies represented here. The key questions today seemed to focus on the challenges that everyone associated with college admissions has had to deal with this past year due to the troubled economy.
