Othello

If you are not using the Tortilla Chef, first heat two heavy skillets, one over medium heat the other a little hotter. Press the dough balls between layers of smooth plastic (large zip lock bags cut into circles a little larger than your tortilla press are ideal). Peel off the top layer of plastic and invert the pressed dough onto the palm of your hand, then peel off the remaining layer of plastic.

Homeschool ID Cards

The number of homeschool students grew from 1.2 in 2003 to a staggering 2.4 million in 2006 according to the National Home Education Research Institute. With this type of growth you have to wander what is the cause for the amazing increase in homeschool attendance. Based on surveys, there are three primary reasons children are being trained at home instead of the government funded solution. The primary reason parents have chosen to train their kids is to incorporate religi...

Clean Vacationing

It feels very good to clear up a beach of shards of broken glass hiding just below the surface before an unwary swimmer splashes into it. It does not, however, feel as good to find a large fish hook by imbedding it in the bottom of your foot.

Is Recycling A Waste Of Time, Money And Energy?

Most of us feel guilty if we do not take the trouble to wash and sort all those reusable plastics, papers and tins. We do this to avoid throwing them in the bin which then ends up in the landfill sites around the country. But how useful is recycling and can it really solve the "waste crisis"? UK households generate a staggering thirty million tonnes of rubbish a year, of which sixty per cent comes from packaging. There has been a lot of publicity recently about waste that ...

The Small But Essential Microscope Slide

One of the sometimes overlooked pieces of equipment in any research lab is the humble microscope slide. Yet without a high quality microscope slide, the characteristics of the specimen being viewed can often be confused with the characteristics of the surface on which it is placed. A colored background will appear, under magnification, to be part of the specimen, and may even cause light refection which creates a haze around the specimen and makes it harder to analyze Mi...

The Future of Life in the Zeroes

The Future of Life in the ZeroesToday a small piece of plastic enables you to make a telephone call from anywhere in the world to anyone in the world. A mobile phone no bigger than a playing card would electronically transmit words to a computer screen, send a fax and receive replies on its tiny screen. Technology that was once science fiction-is now with you.
As we have entered what some call that “Zeroes” (the opening years of the new millennium), the future life has already begun to happen.

Solar Power, Worth The Hassle?

In this piece of work that I am about to commence with I will discuss whether or not it is wise to convert or at least supplement your home electricity source with solar power. This is a worthwhile undertaking because there are many things in this world that are billed as cost or time saving and are actually the opposite when looked at with the right measurements or perspective. So the question is, “is solar power what it claims to be—a clean source of energy that is cheaper ...

Efficiency Equals Reduction

Imagine that if at the grocery store the person bagging your purchases left empty, unused spaces in each bag causing you to carry 10 instead of 5 bags out to your car then into your home. You would be investing some extra time, energy and space when it was unnecessary. Now transfer that thought to the waste and recycling industry. Instead of filling a trash bag or bin with large empty spaces, we can all do some simple acts to help...

Garbage in its Place

There is nothing worse than seeing garbage blowing down the street of your neighborhood, or finding broken shards of glass at the local swimming hole where children play. Wildlife is just as vulnerable to garbage and many have lost their lives after becoming tangled in waste or mistaking garbage for food. It is up to each of us to make an effort to minimize this unsightly, and sometimes hazardous, problem.

Dorm Room Essentials
Make sure you have the essentials and the comforts of home when going off to college your freshman year. Here are some suggestions to make the transition to dorm life a little easier:

Bring some plastic utensils, bowl, cup etc for eating in your room. It’s easier to get disposable items than have to wash everything out. A bottle opener and chip clips may also come in use. A bedside lamp might be helpful if the room is not well lit and you are up late reading, an alarm clock, wastebasket, fan and lamp for your desk could be helpful accessories as well.

Milk crates or storage cubes that are easy to stack in your closet or corner of the room are useful for storing whatever you may need, or storing extra books/clothes. Under-the-bed storage bins are also a smart idea to save room and stash unneeded items away. You may want to bring your own drying rack for laundry, a calendar, some adhesive hooks for hanging things on the wall and a toolkit—you never know when a screwdriver will come in handy.
