Poetry Essays: Take Out your Poetic Licence

The simplest way to describe a Poetry Essay is as an essay that evaluates poems. Such an essay takes a deep look at the words, sounds and emotions used in a poem. It then analyzes the way in which they are used and expressed. This type of essay must analyze the topic of the poem and the message that the poem is trying to convey. Equally important are the words used and the rhythm that the poem has created.

Richard Cory Essay

Richard Cory EssayThe narrators in Edwin Arlington Robinson’s poem, “Richard Cory“, are a few people who are standing near Cory as he walks down the street. They are going about their business when Richard Cory walks within visual range and is immediately discussed by the narrators. The town in which the story takes place in is essentially small. This sort of scenario would never take place in a larger city simply because there would be several people like Richard Cory, not just one.

ESSAY SAMPLE ON "A COMPARISON OF TWO POEMS ON RACIAL PREJUDICE"

The first of the two poems that I will study is "Strange Fruit". This is a very simple and meaningful poem. The author of this poem is writing about what was happening to the black people of the southern states of America. It shows exactly what happens to them when captured which brings in some strong sentences "And the sudden smell of burning flesh" I think that the most effective words of the poem are in the title because you have to read the whole of the poem to understand what it means.

Alfred, in the last line of the poem, "And like a thunderbolt he falls" (line 6), maybe telling the reader that at that moment the eagle has spotted his prey/opportunity and like a thunderbolt falls from his safe haven to strike with lightening speed, confidence and power, like a person seizing life's opportunity as if it is a once in a lifetime chance, never to get that one moment back if the eagle/person misses his mark

Heritage

In the poem “Heritage” by Lorna Dee Cervantes the speaker goes back to the place of her
families decent to find her heritage, only to discover despise and hatred from her people.
Although she is of the same decent and race of the people the see her as a traitor because she was
raised American. The poems imagery shows how harsh the people are acting towards Lorna Dee
Cervantes and describes the setting. The poem gives the impression that heritage is an object.
This shows that in Mexican culture heritage is more than skin deep a person has to
actually live their culture and heritage to be accepted.

William

Michael William Wordsworth's pastoral, 'Michael', was a lot to take in the first time I read it. The story was clear, I understood that it is about the misfortunes of a family living in the early 1800's, and I picked up on some biblical allusions, but I read it unaware of the conditions that surrounded most people at the time, and unaware of Wordsworth's intentions. I am no expert on interpreting poetry, especially a lengthy pastoral which at times uses words and phrases that I have never even heard of before, so the need to gain an understanding of the background of this poem soon became imperative. After a bit of research into the early 1800's, and into William Wordsworth, I came to be very moved by the poem.
