Small Schools Offer Alternatives For Indianapolis Schools

When I was in high school, I attended the only high school our town had. A one-high school town, our school was home to every 14-18 year old in residence. My senior year, there were about 250 of us graduating. I thought that was a lot; but I still at least knew everyone’s name, even if I wasn’t friends with them all. Looking back, our school wasn’t that big compared to some; the name of every person in my graduating class fit on the back of the Prom T-shirt! I never thought o...

Entrepreneurship Major Introduced For Secondary Florida Schools

One of the things I appreciated, only after graduating college graduation, was that my school employed professors, who had “real world” experience. I cannot tell you how many times we heard a professor say, “Okay, that’s what the textbook tells you. Now, let me tell you how it works in the real world.” Textbooks only give students a foundation on which to build later in a real job. Often times, the real world does not follow the procedures set forth in or look/act anythi...

Credit Card Debt on the Rise as Students Struggle to Pay for College Expenses
The effects of the current economic downturn are long reaching. As families continue to cut costs and save money to make it through tough times, college students are turning to credit cards to help fund their college education.

According to a study released yesterday by Sallie Mae, eighty-four percent of undergraduates had a least one credit card (survey results are from spring of 2008) which is up from seventy-six percent in 2004. Half of all college students have four or more credit cards at the time of the survey.

It appears college students are carrying more credit cards and higher balances as they use credit cards to pay for textbooks, computer costs, school supplies and tuition. In addition to traditional expenses associated with college the highest ranked “other” expenses are food, clothing and cosmetics.

An Imaginary Commencement Speech from an Admissions Dean
The job of college admissions officers is more art than science, and it can be difficult to describe all the elements that go into the evaluation of applicants. After all, they must base their decisions on the accomplishments of 17 or 18 year olds, while trying to envision what they might become in just four short years. It would no doubt be gratifying to be able to go back and reevaluate those decisions on graduation day. Were they the right ones? How did the students turn out?

Jeffrey Brenzel, dean of undergraduate admissions at Yale University, was able to do just that with the graduating class of 2010 – in his imagination. In a poignant column for the Huffington Post, he writes the commencement speech he would have given had he been asked. (Bill Clinton will speak in his stead). Among the first questions Brenzel would pose to graduates are: What do you know now that you did not know four years ago? What can you do now that you could not do four years ago? Could you, as they say in the exam question, support your answer with specific examples?

Find More Than Just A Degree Of Success At California Community Colleges

It's a great pleasure and honor studying, working as well as teaching at some of the prestigious California community colleges. I moved in 1977 across from back east of the country with two suitcases and 300 dollars, to take advantage of the educational system in California in general and of California community colleges—for starters—in particular. Besides being unbelievably affordable at that time it was also extremely reputable as fine preparatory, or transitional, institut...
