Example Economics Essay:Extent to which international migration is likely to promote economic development
This paper discusses the extent to which international migration is likely to promote economic development. International migration may be both outward and inward. The loss of nationals is sometimes referred to as the ‘brain drain’ and suggests the loss of younger, talented professionals who will not be contributing to domestic development, and who, in addition, have taken money out of the developing economy through investment in their education and training. These individuals may send remittances back to their home country, which may provide more income (and foreign currency) than lower paid domestic employment or unemployment, and they may also learn skills that they bring back to their country of origin. Generally, however, ‘brain drain’ is thought to be detrimental to the home economy. Developing economies may experience a temporary inflow of employees of multi-national corporations (MNCs) and workers with aid organizations, which will raise productivity by introducing skills and knowledge to the benefit of the host economy. The outcomes of international migration are presented as viewed from the standpoint of a developed country.

According to political economy, there are three push factors for migration: poor economic conditions in the country, political conditions that compel people to migrate, and socio-cultural conditions of migrants. Migration remains largely undocumented, nevertheless, it is generally known to be on the increase, remain irreversible and uncontrollable. According to the study on refugees and internally displaced people in Africa, Akokpari notes that civil and ethnic conflicts, colonial and racist rule, oppressive governments and environmental facts disasters are the main causes of Africa’s refugee crisis (1998). Voluntary migration is caused by economic reasons – migration to the more economically developed countries. African state’s partisan posture and inability to address and resolve tensions in society, hostility of international economy and resulting economic pressures lead to increased migration.

Environmental factors allowed slavery to implement and survive in many ways. For example, warm southern climates were suitable for high demands of sugar and cotton. This brought slaves into the picture as they are the ones who were needed to work in the fields and get the job done. Also, expansion of land in the north allowed colonists to profit from a commodity such as tobacco. These factors greatly contributed to the survival of slavery, as it showed that slaves were essential to get these basic needs fulfilled.

In terms of racial composition, immigration, internal migration, and regional concentration by race, the four countries vary substantially. Brazil and the United States have a number of demographic characteristics and trends in common: both countries increased their population greatly by large-scale immigration from overseas; until the mid-nineteenth century immigration was mostly involuntary and from Africa; thereafter it became voluntary and was mostly of European and secondarily of Asian origin. The pattern of regional concentration and internal migration by race was also similar in Brazil and the United States. In both countries the Negro population was heavily concentrated in a major region (the Northeast in Brazil, the Southeast in the United States), and starting in the late nineteenth century there was a progressive dispersion of the Negro population to other regions. When we examine racial distribution macroscopically, we note an increasing spacial homogenization by race, although in the United States and to some extent in Brazil this regional dispersion was accompanied by local concentration by race in urban working-class slums. Both Brazil and the United States are predominantly "white" according to the respective social definitions of that term, even though this was not true for Brazil prior to the twentieth century.

By the 1930s a few judicial decisions began to nibble at the edifice of racial segregation, and both the Great Depression and the New Deal policies exercised a certain leveling effect between poor whites and poor Negroes. Migration outside the South continued, if only in search of nondiscriminatory relief. However, it took World War II to unleash forces powerful enough to undermine the racial status quo. Negro migration to the large industrial centers of the North, the Great Lakes, and as far as the West Coast greatly accelerated during the war and continued thereafter. By 1960 only 61 per cent of Negroes were living in the South and only 21 per cent of the southern population were Negro. More servicemen than ever before fought and lived abroad, albeit in a Jim Crow army, and came in contact with societies in which racial bigotry did not exist. The strong incentive not to waste manpower motivated the establishment of Fair Employment Practices Commissions and opened up new occupational opportunities for Negroes. Racism, of course, was far from dead, as shown by the wartime internment of United States citizens of Japanese descent condoned by Franklin D. Roosevelt.
