How to Fully Enjoy College Football
For many students, college is a fact of campus life. Whether you’re going to a school known for its football program, or take part in a modest conference, it’s fun to get involved in the game. Here’s how you can make the most out of college football.

Understand the game. To really enjoy college football, it helps to have an idea of what’s going on. Watch some football on TV and find out how the flow of the game works so that you know what’s happening during the game. If you don’t understand, just ask a knowledgeable friend what is going on.

Participate in activities. Buy tickets to the game-some schools may even offer free tickets to students. Actually going to the game is much more exciting than learning about what happened after the fact or watching it far away on TV. Get the real experience by visiting the stadium in person and cheering on your school’s team with your fellow students.

ESSAY SAMPLE ON "A COMPARISON OF THE RULES OF RUGBY AND FOOTBALL"

The thick, broad-shouldered athlete breathes heavily and grunts with each step as he and his teammates push mightily against the opposition. His arms are locked over his teammates' shoulders, all of their heads down. The two teams are pushing against each other like two moose fighting over territory. He looks down to see the ball, sitting just in front of his feet. If he could just hook it with his foot and heave it to his teammate behind him...

Shades Of Red, Part 2

Still curious about Rutgers-Nebraska comparisons, I stumbled on a short biography of former Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne in a book I just finished called 100 Heroes: People in Sports Who Make This a Better World. It led me to collect a little more information about this Hall of Fame coach, which I’d like to share with the online audience. The Rutgers 1000 really picked the wrong school to pick on. First, are Osborne’s football accomplishments, after 25 years as...

The Rutgers 1000 Is Baaaack!

I have lived in New Jersey practically all of my life. The Garden State has been in fiscal crisis practically all of my academic life and my working life. I realized this almost thirty years ago, as a student taxpayer; the tuition at Rutgers tripled between from my freshman year to my senior year. All that time the campus looked the same, the complaints about the campus were the same. The complaints about traffic, large lecture classes, deferred maintenance, and so on, ...

5 Colleges That Produce the Most Professional Athletes
Most students earn college degrees to help launch careers, but many graduates admit that their fondest memories of school were formed in a stadium, not a library. Legions of college kids bond together every year as they pack the seats in major venues like the University of Michigan’s "Big House" football stadium or Duke University’s Cameron Indoor basketball arena. The athletes who compete in those games can gain fame on campus, and some of them even go on to make careers out of their skill in handling a ball or puck.

To find the schools that produce the most professional athletes, Forbes magazine recently counted the college affiliations of sports stars in American men’s professional football, baseball, hockey, soccer and basketball leagues:
The University of Michigan. The college with the most active sports pros was Michigan, with 68 professional athletes in the five major leagues as of 2008. The list is loaded with football players like champion quarterback Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, and goes on to include basketball players like Juwan Howard and hockey players like Marty Turco. Still, aspiring jocks should beware that the statistics are against them. The Wolverines award almost 6,500 bachelor’s degrees every year, which means that only one in every 1,000 students who graduated in the last decade is making his living as an athlete.

Crash

Crash by Jerry Spinelli is about a young man named John Coogan. Everyone calls John Crash except for one boy named Penn Webb. Everyone calls him Crash because when he got his football helmet for Christmas his Uncle Herm's family came over to see his presents and when they opened the door Crash growled “hut, hut, hut” and plowed straight through Herm's daughter, Bridget, knocking her on her butt into a foot of snow.

The Challenge of Being a Student-Athlete

The Challenge of Being a Student-Athlete
The Challenge of Being a Student-Athlete
Many college sports fans think student-athletes have it made: they get a free education in exchange for playing sports. If they’re any good, they earn Big Man (or Woman) on Campus status and even national fame for their accomplishments. Some are rewarded with multi-million dollar contracts before they even graduate. Despite the perceptions of critical observers of college athletics, the success of student-athletes is wrought with hard work and dedication.

It’s an investment in time, especially for participants in the most popular college sport – football. According to a 2006 NCAA study, college football players spend an average of 44.8 hours per week practicing and playing their sport. That’s a full-time job plus about five hours of overtime. The work isn’t easier for other student-athletes. Golfers spend 40.8 hours per week on the course and softball players hit the field 37.1 hours per week. Student-athletes aren’t normal students. They don’t get to experience the simple pleasures that most take for granted. Christmas and Thanksgiving breaks last just a few days combined, so little time is spent with their families. Spring Breaks are used for training and not trips to the coast, so few lasting memories are made with their friends.
