Income

Lee Price, of the Economic Policy Institute, holds an opinion which contrasts Hertsgaard's idea that the 9/11 attacks were completely responsible for the economic decline. "Don't get me wrong. There can be no doubt that the economy was thrown for a loop by the attacks on September 11. But it was short-lived loop. Retail sales, travel, and the financial markets were put on hold for a number of days. Within a couple of months, however, retail growth had moved back on the strong growth trend that had preceded September 11. The stock market was closed for a period and took an immediate dive after reopening. Within a couple of months, however, the major indexes soared past their September 10 levels" (Price )

A Turning Point in my life essay

A Turning Point in my life essay
A Turning Point in my life essay
When I entered the Media Room on September 11th, and actually saw for myself the planes streaking overhead and destroying human life by smashing into one of New York's trademarks, I was speechless. The feeling in my gut made me sick; I was unable to stand. How could people do this to their own fellow Clevelanders? Somewhere deep in my hart I understood that my life perception will be changed dramatically and it did. Now years had past but I see how changes have effected our society and our views. Like for example air travel.

American Society before and after 9/11 essay

American Society before and after 9/11 essay
September 11th was a sad day and many innocent lives were taken, but it brought a nation together that has been for years loosing or taking advantage of who we are as a country. We never thought that we would be targeted and hit by an enemy in our on land. It woke all of us up to what is really going on and it us want to support our nation once again. People were driving around with flags on their cars; people had a flag hanging from every house. Something that the younger generation had never seen before.

Before September 11th we were at our most vulnerable on that most horrific day. I remember being able to go to the airport, check in your bags in about 10-15 minutes, and run to your gate with just a few minutes to spare. We used to be able to come to work and think that it would just be another day filled with the things that we did everyday. We did not have FBI agents breathing down our necks, barriers at the gates, or long 2 hour lines at the airports. We thought that we were safe for the most part. The economy was doing well because we had jobs and a sense of security. However, on the horrific day, September 11, 2001, the life that we knew came to an end. Although, we have tried to put some normalcy back into our lives, it just has not been the same. When I awoke, I turned on the television to see what was on the news.

As the summer draws to an end, many students dread returning to school. Many colleges are off from mid-May until the beginning of September. That’s more than three months away from the rigors of studying. These months are typically filled with students working summer jobs or doing internships back home. Being home also gives students a chance to reconnect with family and old friends from high school. It can be very easy for students to fall into a routine that bears no resemblance to their lives away at college. As the calendar turns to August, these students need to start thinking about returning to classes and campus. For some, this is not a welcomed change.

If you are not looking forward to going back to school, there are some steps you can take to get back into the college mode. First of all, reach out to your college friends during the weeks leading up to the beginning of the semester. It is easy to fall out of touch with these people during the summer. However, by simply talking with your friends from college you can start feeling energized about the upcoming school year. Inevitably, these talks will turn to reminiscing about the good times you had last year. You will start to plan exciting things for the next year. Maybe, you will talk about throwing back to school party or the first tailgate session at the first home football game.

If you missed out on the Rethinking Admissions Conference here at Wake Forest last spring, you’ll get another chance to hear from experts on some of the very same topics at this month’s meeting of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC). The last day of the national conference in Baltimore, September 26, includes three sessions on the use of standardized testing in admissions. First up is Wake Forest’s Martha Allman, who will join three other experts to discuss the ins and outs of implementing a test-optional admission policy. The NACAC answered the “why” of going test optional, now discussion turns to the “how.” The second panel will feature Wake Forest’s Joseph Soares, an associate professor of sociology who helped organize the Rethinking Admissions Conference. He will join two other scholars to discuss research on the old and new SAT and college admissions, as well as share Wake Forest’s experience with tests and admissions. The third panel will feature two speakers who will focus on alternative approaches to admissions and their impact on social diversity, academic quality, practical ability and creativity. You’ll find a full list of speakers below. There’s still time to register to attend the conference scheduled for September 24-26, or just log in to the NACAC conference blog for the latest news.

U.S. News & World Report: Are the SATs a Must for College Admissions?
Are the SATs necessary for college admissions? Or is high school performance just as good an indicator of a student’s likely success? That’s the topic U.S. News & World Report tackles in its September issue. We first told you about it last month when the issue hit newsstands. Now you can read about it online. Click here to see columns by Wake Forest Provost Jill Tiefenthaler and Gaston Caperton, president of the College Board. As you might imagine, each has a very different view on this issue.
