For Those on Waiting List, April is the Cruelest Month
April has been called the cruelest month on the calendar for college-bound seniors. It’s the time when admissions letters arrive in mailboxes, elating some and dashing the hopes of others. But those on the waiting list of the college of their choice say, for them, the news may be cruelest of all. “I’d rather have a yes or no,” says Ashley Koski, who was put on Duke University’s waiting list along with 3,382 applicants. “I can’t make plans and be excited like the rest of my friends.”

According to the New York Times, Duke’s waiting list is almost twice the size of the incoming freshman class, and much larger than it was last year. Although the university is uncertain how many of the 4,000 applicants it accepted will actually attend, it estimates that only about 60 applicants will be admitted off the waiting list.

If you missed out on the Rethinking Admissions Conference here at Wake Forest last spring, you’ll get another chance to hear from experts on some of the very same topics at this month’s meeting of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC). The last day of the national conference in Baltimore, September 26, includes three sessions on the use of standardized testing in admissions. First up is Wake Forest’s Martha Allman, who will join three other experts to discuss the ins and outs of implementing a test-optional admission policy. The NACAC answered the “why” of going test optional, now discussion turns to the “how.” The second panel will feature Wake Forest’s Joseph Soares, an associate professor of sociology who helped organize the Rethinking Admissions Conference. He will join two other scholars to discuss research on the old and new SAT and college admissions, as well as share Wake Forest’s experience with tests and admissions. The third panel will feature two speakers who will focus on alternative approaches to admissions and their impact on social diversity, academic quality, practical ability and creativity. You’ll find a full list of speakers below. There’s still time to register to attend the conference scheduled for September 24-26, or just log in to the NACAC conference blog for the latest news.

Credit Card Debt on the Rise as Students Struggle to Pay for College Expenses
The effects of the current economic downturn are long reaching. As families continue to cut costs and save money to make it through tough times, college students are turning to credit cards to help fund their college education.

According to a study released yesterday by Sallie Mae, eighty-four percent of undergraduates had a least one credit card (survey results are from spring of 2008) which is up from seventy-six percent in 2004. Half of all college students have four or more credit cards at the time of the survey.

It appears college students are carrying more credit cards and higher balances as they use credit cards to pay for textbooks, computer costs, school supplies and tuition. In addition to traditional expenses associated with college the highest ranked “other” expenses are food, clothing and cosmetics.

Do you have to write one more college essay? Yes, in the beginning essay writing may seem interesting because essay is rather small academic paper and it is not necessary to make so many efforts to write it in comparison with dissertation writing or at least coursework writing. That’s why it seems to be interesting to write small academic paper on interesting themes and also have the possibility to express personal opinion about this theme. But if you have to write ten or more essays during the month, then essay writing doesn’t seem to be so interesting and attractive. That’s why usually after the first year of education students’ enthusiasm decreases greatly. They begin to irritate when it is necessary to write one more essay on very obscure theme concerning cannibalism or feminism. Boys will be very “glad” to write about feminism!
